Byzantine Encolpion Reliquary Cross – 10th Century Corinth Replica
A large, double-sided Byzantine encolpion reliquary cross, reconstructed from a 10th-century archaeological find discovered in Corinth, Greece.
This substantial hinged bronze pendant opens to reveal an inner compartment, faithfully reflecting the distinctive construction of medieval Christian reliquary crosses.
Available in two finishes: natural bronze and gold-plated bronze.
Designed, crafted and finished entirely in our own FenrirS workshop, this historical reconstruction combines archaeological heritage with traditional craftsmanship.
HISTORY OF THE ORIGINAL
The original encolpion was discovered in Corinth, Greece, and dates to the 10th century. It is identified as archaeological object no. 2058.
An especially fascinating detail of this discovery is that the cross was found with remains of an aromatic substance inside.
This unusual find provides a tangible connection to the personal and religious practices of the Byzantine world. While encolpions were commonly associated with the keeping of sacred relics, the aromatic contents of this particular example are an important part of its individual archaeological history.
The original cross features elaborate decoration on both sides, including religious imagery, ornamental details and inscriptions.
Our reconstruction follows the design of this specific archaeological artifact, preserving its characteristic form, double-sided decoration and opening construction.
